Getting Settled

We arrived in Veyrier (a little village outside Geneva, right on the French border) the evening of the 11th, exhausted, out of sorts, and without furniture or food.    A couple pictures of Veyrier:

We grabbed dinner at our local pizza joint (real Italian pizza!) and then the fun began.  Here is a timeline of the evening:

8pm:  Lucia goes to sleep.
11pm:  Sarah and Jaime go to sleep.
2am:  Lucia pops out of bed like toast and is ready for a new day.  We try to explain that it is now night, but nothing could dissuade her body to believe otherwise.
2-4am:  Sarah hangs out with Lucia and tries to keep her from waking the neighbors.
4-6am:  Jaime's shift with Lucia. Lots of waking mom up from her fitful sleep.
6am:  Lucia has a meltdown and wakes the house and most likely the rest of Veyrier up from their slumber.
7:45am:  Lucia finally goes back to sleep.
8am:  The movers come.  No rest for the weary.

Our sleep schedule, or lack thereof, continued for a good five days, a hodgepodge of random sleep and non-sleep, in and out of days and nights.

One of the great fortunes for us all was that our shipments from the US had beat us to Geneva and though it would be a tough day we knew, it would help us all settle more easily if we had our things here as soon as possible.

So, when Lucia woke that first afternoon, she became reacquainted with her slide:

And the second day, we got her room all unpacked and ready to go, so she spent hours going through books, toys and stuffed animals she hadn't seen since they were packed on a boat months ago.

And normalcy slowly began to creep back into our lives.  In-between unpacking boxes and putting together furniture, we've been getting to know the village and Geneva better, getting out for walks and dinners here and there.

Lucia has been enjoying her new home, our little, postage-stamp yard, and the bathtub.  Here she is hamming up an improvised soup bowl hat.

Jaime was back to work last Monday and Sarah and Lucia have been discovering the joys of having a local grocer and butcher, the wading pool and slides, and we all have been loving the breathtaking part of the world in which we now live.

  1. The kids and I are thrilled to have a way to follow your adventure! I have to admit that it made me a little teary, and made me miss the little button (and the 2 of you) even more, but I am happy to be able to keep up on your current events this way! XO

  2. Kisses to all of you. Glad you've decided to do this and with pix, too! Chadwick is attempting to win a wine trip to Italia possibly this spring. I'm taking a year off of teaching so I won't be so confined time wise. Gawd, I'll actually only have ONE job, can you believe it? I need to see my Zii soon; they're both in mid-80s. Anyway, should this happen (and I don't doubt the Chadwick) we'll be tipping a few together to the new life. Love, love.
